Artificial Intelligence applications in Oncology


Your working environment

The Netherlands Cancer Institute - Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (NKI-AvL) is a leading Comprehensive Cancer Center with more than 100 years of history and employs high-performance multidisciplinary teams consisting of scientists, clinicians, laboratory specialists, bioinformaticians, software developers, security and privacy experts, data managers, and other staff. In the next decade, NKI-AvL aims to leverage the value of Artificial Intelligence in Oncology (AI in Oncology) for its scientific research and healthcare activities. This covers applications in fundamental research, screening, diagnostics, treatment and quality of life. Increasing numbers of workers: students (PhDs, postdocs), scientific staff, treating physicians, conduct AI-related research and implement algorithmic diagnostic and clinical support. In addition to these developments, there is a growing focus on knowledge centralisation and collaboration with external parties.


Your prospective role

You will coordinate and implement Artificial Intelligence applications in Oncology using a DevOps approach and be part of the data life cycle management team. Specifically, you will be responsible for innovative, sustainable, secure and compliant data management solutions for a set of purpose-driven projects. With your expertise in computational life sciences you will work towards deployment and implementations of deep learning algorithms in routine pathological diagnostics, an extremely data rich field where large gains can still be made. Breast and Ovarian cancer, and specifically association to outcome and immunotherapy response will be areas of specific interest.


You will be working in a multidisciplinary environment within the research teams of Hugo Horlings (Pathologist at AVL and Clinical group leader ‘computational Pathology (www.cpath.nl), Jonas Teuwen (Group leader AI for Oncology at NKI) and within the Research IT and Data Management team under supervision of Jelle ten Hoeve. The life cycle of research data to be managed within the frameworks of the General Data Protection Regulation, the standard NEN 7510 (prescribing information security requirements for the Dutch healthcare sector), and the FAIR principles for improving the Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reuse of digital assets.


Your profile

We seek to recruit an ambitious candidate, holding a MSc or PhD degree. You should be capable of independent thinking, with a strong interest in translational cancer research and implementation of AI applications in daily clinical practice. Candidates should hold a degree in computer science, bioinformatics or related discipline, and be proficient in programming languages (e.g. R, Python). We expect candidates to be highly self-motivated, creative, and a team-player with strong communication skills. Full-stack development skills, core activities being back-end web stack and mobile stack, and administration skills for Linux and cloud-based systems is a requirement.


It is a plus if you have:

Experience with clinical trials or translational research studies

Experience with digital pathology systems and data models

Experience with information security and privacy aspects

Experience with serious gaming

General knowledge of biology, anatomy, pathology and/or oncology

Experience with the Agile/SCRUM methodology

You will join a dynamic international research group. You will collaborate with scientists and clinicians with expertise in different disciplines. You will have the opportunity to follow high-quality courses offered by the NKI career development program. The gross salary per month will be from € 3.375- to € 4.111,- according to the FWG-function group 55, and depends on previous experience. The terms of employment will be in accordance with the CAO Ziekenhuizen (Collective Labour Agreement for Hospitals). In addition, a fixed end-of-year benefit forms part of the secondary conditions. You will start with a contract for a period of 1 year. There is the possibility for temporary or permanent contract extension upon evaluation. Amsterdam is a very livable city with many cultural amenities. The institute is located within a 20-minute tram or bicycle ride from the center of Amsterdam and within 20-minutes from Schiphol airport by car, bus or bicycle.
